Migrate Google Drive Files to OneDrive Using Mover.io

Issue

  • How do I migrate my Google Docs to OneDrive?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Student or Employee
  • Google Drive
  • Office 365
  • OneDrive

Explanation

  • Google Drive has been in use at OSU for several years.  Prior to this year, Google offered unlimited storage in the Drive space as an education entity.  Effective 2023, Google is enforcing caps on our available storage.

Resolution

This article explains how to copy your files from Google Drive to OneDrive using the https://mover.io/ application.

Limitations and Important Notes

  • Please note, this process only Copies data.  Once you verify the data you want to move is in place, please delete the data in Google Drive and then empty the Trash.
  • Mover will copy all content in your Google Drive, and Folders you own.
  • Shared Folders:  If you have a shared folder, this will copy all the content owned by other users in the folder that you have shared.  However, if you have content in in a Shared folder owned by another user that content will not be copied.  However, if the owner of the folder follows this process that will copy any data you own in the shared folder.
  • Google does not allow export of: DrawingsFormsSites, and Maps as these formats require Google environment.
  • Three types of Google docs will be converted:
    • Google Sheets -> Excel
    • Google Doc -> Word
    • Google Slide -> PowerPoint
  • Files marked "Restricted" by the user will not be migrated.
  • Google Drive Shortcuts are not migrated, which includes shortcuts to Google Shared Drives/folders.
  • Share permissions are not migrated: Shared content/folders will need to be re-shared.
  • IMPORTANT: Please note, once you initiate the "Start Copy" process it can take some time to complete.  The process will not be complete until the "Migration Manager" shows migration was successful.
