Canvas: Create a duplicate quiz or question bank from a Canvas quiz

Tags Canvas

These instructions can also be used to duplicate Canvas quizzes.

By default, Canvas will create a question bank with a copy of the question when you create a question in a Canvas quiz. Please review your course question bank(s) to determine whether your quiz questions are already present in a question bank. If the quiz questions are not already in a question bank, you can use the following steps to create a question bank from your quiz. Briefly, you will export your Canvas quiz(zes) to a QTI file, then import the QTI file to your course.

Export Canvas Quiz

To export the Canvas quiz:

  1. Navigate to the Canvas course where the quiz resides
  2. Click Settings in the course menu on the left
  3. Click Export Course Content in the menu on the right (or bottom of the page if your screen is small)
  4. Select Quiz for the Export Type
  5. Select the quiz(zes) you want to export
  6. Click Create Export
  7. A new QTI Export item will appear immediately below the Content Exports heading on the page
  8. Click the new QTI Export item to download the QTI file

Import to duplicate Quiz and create Question Bank

Importing the QTI file into a Canvas course will duplicate the quiz and create a question bank for each quiz that is in the QTI export file. The name of the question bank will automatically populate with the name of the imported quiz.

  1. Navigate to the Canvas course where the quiz resides
  2. Click Settings in the course menu on the left
  3. Click Import Course Content in the menu on the right (or bottom of the page if your screen is small)
  4. Select QTI .zip file from the Content Type drop-down menu
  5. Select the exported QTI file as the Source
  6. Do not change the Default Question bank (leave as Select question bank)
  7. Do not check the box for Overwrite assessment content with matching IDs
  8. Click Import
  9. Wait for the QTI import to finish

At this point, you should see a quiz in Quizzes and a question bank in Question Banks for each imported quiz. If you imported the QTI file into the course from which you exported, you will have two copies of the quiz (original and duplicate) and, unless you were trying to duplicate your quiz, you will want to delete or edit/rename the duplicated quiz.
