Email - Send Mail via POP/IMAP Client

Caution: Starting November 1, 2022, all new ONID accounts - including students - will be created with Exchange email and not Gmail.

Issue/Question

  • How do I send email from a POP or IMAP email client?

Explanation

In the past, OSU POP and IMAP users configured their email clients to send mail through mail.oregonstate.edu. As of 9/18/2020, customers need to configure their email clients to send mail via Office365's mail servers, or Gmail's mail servers.

These instructions generally only apply to customers using email clients such as Mac Mail, Thunderbird, or Outlook in IMAP mode.

Resolution

Use Office365 SMTP Server

  1. Configure the following in your email client's outgoing mail (SMTP) server settings:
    • Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.office365.com
    • Port: 587
    • Connection Security/SSL: STARTTLS
    • Authentication:  Normal Password
  2. When prompted to login, enter your username@oregonstate.edu
