Microsoft 365 - Set Profile Photo

Issue/Question

  • How do I set my profile photo in Microsoft 365?
  • My profile photo in Office is different than elsewhere.
  • I updated by profile photo in Office 365 but Teams has not updated yet.
  • My profile photo in SharePoint online is different than elsewhere.

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Microsoft 365, Office 365
  • Teams
  • SharePoint Online
  • Microsoft Office

Cause/Explanation

Profile photos are stored in several locations in the Microsoft 365 environment. There are at least two ways to set your profile photo, and it can take some time (2-3 days) for all of the applications to synchronize the change.

In addition, the profile photo displayed in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, etc.) is based on the photo stored in Active Directory on-prem, which customers do not have access to set directly. Setting your profile photo online via the Microsoft 365 website or Teams does not update the photo in Office.

Note that neither the Active Directory on-prem photo nor the Microsoft 365 photo are synchronized with your Banner photo from your OSU ID.

  4. Select "Upload Picture" and choose a file from your computer
  5. Click "Save"

Note: This method requires an Exchange mailbox and does not work for all students at this time. See: Teams - Can't Set Profile Picture in Teams

Method 3 - Ask your IT Team to Set Your Active Directory On-Prem Photo

Contact your IT team to set a picture in Active Directory on-prem. The AD on-prem photo is the one that shows in Microsoft Office products.
