Exchange Email - "Your Organization Does Not Allow External Forwarding"

Issue/Question

  • Can I forward my OSU Exchange email to an external address?
  • I tried to send email to someone at OSU and received the error: "Remote Server returned '550 5.7.520 Access denied, Your organization does not allow external forwarding'"
  • I tried to send email to someone at OSU and received the error: "Your message wasn't delivered because the recipient's email provider rejected it"

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Exchange Email

Explanation

External forwarding is not allowed on OSU Exchange email accounts. For more information, see: Email - Auto-Forwarding from Exchange Disabled July 1, 2021

If you set a forward to a non-OSU address, anyone who tries to send to you will receive an error and their message will not be forwarded.

Resolution

If you have set a forward on your OSU email to an external address, you will need to remove the forward.

If you tried to send email to someone and received the "Your organization does not allow external forwarding" message, please ask that person to remove the invalid forward.

Note: for former employees, setting an auto-reply is the recommended method to direct sender's to a new address. Steps to set an auto-reply: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/send-automatic-out-of-office-replies-from-outlook-9742f476-5348-4f9f-997f-5e208513bd67
