Wireless - Connect to OSU_Secure on Windows 8/8.1 with Manual Configuration

Issue/Question

How do I manually connect to OSU_Secure on a Windows 8/8.1 computer?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Windows 8/8.1

Resolution

Note: If OSU_Secure has been added on the machine before, it may require forgetting the network first.

  1. Right click on the wireless icon in the taskbar, then left click Open Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click the Set up a new connection or network button on this page.
  3. A separate window should open. When it does, select Manually Create a Network Profile
  4. Type in the following information:
    Network Name: OSU_Secure
    Security Type: WPA2_Enterprise
    Encryption Type: AES
  5. A window should appear saying "Successfully added OSU_Secure". Click the Change Connection Settings option.
  6. Click on the Security tab at the top, and verify that Security type is WPA2-Enterprise, Encryption Type is AES, and the Network Authentication Method is set to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP).
  7. Click on the Settings button next to the drop-down menu.
  8. Un-check the box next to Validate Server Certificate.
  9. Make sure that the Secure Authentication Method is set to Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2), and then click the Configure button next to it.
  10. Un-check the box next to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password.
  11. Click the OK button two times to close two of the open settings windows.
  12. Click on Advanced Settings.
  13. Check the Specify authentication mode box.
  14. Select User authentication from the dropdown box.
  15. Click on the wireless icon in the taskbar and select the OSU_Secure option.
  16. Sign in using an ONID account.

The computer should then connect to OSU_Secure.
