Google Drive - "You need permission" Warning

Issue/Question

  • Why don't I have access to a Google Drive file?
  • How do I get access to a Google Drive file?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Employee, Student
  • Google Drive

Cause

This page only pops up if you are trying to access a Google Drive file with an account that does not have the permission to do so. This commonly occurs when the owner shares a file with an account that is different than the one you are currently signed in with.

Resolution

  1. When attempting to access a link you may receive the pop up below.
  2. If you believe you have permission, double check what account you are signed in as.
  3. If you are signed in as the wrong account, click on the accounts icon, circled in red above, and log in as the correct one. If you actually need permission, hit the Request access button instead. This will send an email to the owner of the shared material requesting permission to the account you are currently signed in as.
