OSU Gmail - Setup Gmail in Evolution for Linux

Caution: Starting November 1, 2022, all new ONID accounts - including students - will be created with Exchange email and not Gmail.


  • How do I access my OSU Gmail in Evolution for Linux?

These steps were tested with Evolution 3.28.5 on Ubuntu.

  1. You need to configure your Gmail account for IMAP access first:
    1. Follow these steps to enable IMAP in Gmail
    2. Visit https://myaccount.google.com/lesssecureapps to enable less secure apps in Gmail
  2. Open Evolution
    • If this is the first time running Evolution, it will walk you through connecting to your email account. Otherwise, open the File menu and choose New > Mail Account.
  3. Identity
    • Enter your Full Name
    • Enter your username@oregonstate.edu email address
  4. Receiving Email
    • Server Type: IMAP
    • Server: imap.gmail.com
    • Port: 993
    • Username: username@oregonstate.edu
    • Encryption Method: TLS on a dedicated port
  5. Receiving Options
    • You can modify these or leave at defaults
  6. Sending Email
    • Server Type: SMTP
    • Server: smtp.gmail.com
    • Port: 465
    • Encryption Method: TLS on a dedicated port
  7. On the "Account Summary" page, you can uncheck sync for Calendar and Contacts; click "Next"
  8. Click "Apply" to save settings
  9. Login at the Oregon State University login screen if  prompted
    • You will also need to do Duo two-step login
  10. You may see a prompt that says "GNOME Evolution wants to access your Google Account"; select "Allow"
  11. Your mail items should now sync to the Evolution client.
