Windows 8/8.1/10 - Uninstalling Windows Update

Issue/Question

How do I uninstall a Windows Update on a computer running Windows 8/8.1 or Windows 10?

  • Oregon State
    • Windows 8/8.1

Cause

You may run into a point where a particular Windows Update has a bug preventing the utility of a particular feature on the device. Microsoft typically patches these bugs fairly quick. In the case where the feature need to be used immediately, it is usually better to uninstall the update, then re-update once the fix is also live.

Resolution

  1. Confirm a bug is a known issue with a Windows update, by checking Microsoft's page for that particular update.
  2. Open Settings
  3. Click Update & Security
  4. Click View Installed Update History
  5. Click Uninstall updates
  6. Right Click the update you wish to uninstall and select Uninstall
  7. Restart the computer for the change to take affect.
