CN - Network Access for Personal Computers

  • Can I use my personal computer on the OSU network?
  • Can I use a computer that was not setup by CN on the OSU network?

  • Oregon State University
  • Community Network (CN)

For wired network connections, the computer must first be secured per OSU Information Security's Minimum Standards. Generally CN will only help put a computer on the wired network if it is managed by CN. Community Network cannot "manage" personal devices, so we typically do not put these on the wired network. For information about how CN computers are managed, see: Management Applications for OSU Computers. The wireless network can be used as a work-around when using a personal device.

All computers on the OSU wired network must have the following:

  • Up-to-date operating system
  • Up-to-date software
  • Anti-virus software performing regular scans

All computers used to access sensitive or confidential information should also meet the above requirements, regardless of whether they are used on the wired or wireless network, or off-campus. See Data Management and Classification for definitions of unrestricted, sensitive, and confidential data.

Note that computers that have been compromised by malicious software may have their access to the wired or wireless network revoked by the Office of Information Security.
