Docusign - How to Tell if I got a Legitimate Message?

Issue/Question

  • I got a weird Docusign email.
  • This email looks different from usual Docusign emails.
  • I don't recognize this Docusign sender.

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Docusign
  • Outlook

Cause/Explanation

Some phishing attempts try to mimic Docusign Emails to get access to personal accounts and information. As such, this document has some things to look for that are put into legitimate Docusign Emails.

Resolution

Identifying A Legitimate Docusign Email

  1. Legitimate Emails from Docusign will always have instructions for signing in after logging in to DocuSign.com.  If the email is missing this information, it is not a legitimate email.
  2. An easy way to check if you actually have a document to sign is by going to http://docusign.oregonstate.edu and logging in there.  Once there, you can see if you have a document to sign in your inbox.
  3. All emails from Docusign will also have a security code, which can be used for accessing documents from DocuSign.

If an email is missing any of these parts, or if you don't have a document to sign after going to the website in step two, please forward the email to phishing@oregonstate.edu as an attachment to report the email.
