Pro Tools - Launch Error

Issue/Question

  • When launching Pro Tools on macOS the user receives one or more of the following errors:
    • "Could not create a new document because Assertion in "/Volumes/Development..." - there are many variations on this error, but they all begin in this manner
    • "Could not create the TCE plug-in's factory default file because the plug-in doesn't support the current sample rate."
    • "The current playback engine does not support a sample rate of 0 kHz."
  • After clicking through the errors, Pro Tools automatically closes.

Environment

  • macOS
  • Pro Tools 

Cause

Pro Tools "Playback Engine" setting is set to "Pro Tools Aggregate I/O" and is unable to launch with these settings.

Resolution

Method 1

  1. While holding down the "N" key, launch Pro Tools.
    • This will prompt the Playback Engine settings screen to come up.
  2. At the top of the open settings window there will be a drop down menu for selecting the "Playback Engine."
  • If the dropdown is not already set to "Built-in Output", click on the dropdown and select "Built-in Output". The Playback Engine settings should look as below: 
  1. Click "OK" and Pro Tools should finish launching correctly.
