ONID - Personal Website Instructions

Issue/Question

  • How do I create and host a personal web page with my ONID account?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Student, Employee or Associate
  • ONID Account

Resolution

Access Web Directory Via SSH

  1. Use an SSH client to connect to: shell.onid.oregonstate.edu
    • Mac computers come with an SSH client built-in.
    • For Windows computers, Putty is a good, free SSH application.
    • For more help connecting to ONID with SSH, see: ONID Secure Shell
  2. Login with your ONID username and password when prompted.
  3. Authenticate with Duo if prompted.
  4. Once you have logged in, you will be in your home directory. To view your files and folders, enter:

    	ls -l

  5. You should see a folder called public_html, which is your web directory. If you don't see a public_html folder, you can create it by entering these commands:
    	mkdir public_html
    	chmod 755 public_html

Upload Files to Web Directory

  1. Write your HTML pages using an HTML/text editor.
  2. Connect to your ONID home folder and upload your HTML files by using either a mapped network drive OR Secure FTP:
  3. Move or copy your files into the public_html folder.

Fix Permissions

Once your files are on the server, they should have the right permissions on them. However, there are some instances where your transferred files won't be visible when you try to access them through the web. If this happens to you, then you can fix it in a few easy steps using shell access:

  1. Use an SSH client to connect to: shell.onid.oregonstate.edu
  2. Commands for changing permissions on your .html files in your public_html directory:
    	cd ~/public_html
    	find ./ -type d -exec chmod 755 {} \;
    	find ./ -type f -exec chmod 644 {} \;

View Your Webpage

Once everything is completed, you should be able to view your web page by visiting http://people.oregonstate.edu/~username/ in any web browser. Replace "username" with your ONID username.
