Wireless - Connect to Eduroam on Windows 7/8/8.1 - Manual Configuration

Issue/Question

  • How do I manually connect to eduroam on my Windows 7 computer?
  • What do I do if I can't automatically connect to eduroam on my windows 7 computer?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Wireless Network
  • Eduroam
  • Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1

Resolution

  1. Click Start.
  2. Click Control Panel.
  3. Once the Control Panel opens, click Network and Internet.
  4. Then click Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Then on the left-hand side, click Manage Wireless Networks.
  6. Click the Add button on this page. Manage wireless networks window showing "Add" highlighted.
    • Note: If eduroam is already listed here (if you tried to add it already), delete it from the list before continuing to clear out any old settings.
  7. A separate window should open. When it does, select Manually Create a Network ProfileShows selection to "Manually create a network profile".
  8. Type in the following information:
    • Network Name: eduroam
    • Security Type: WPA2_Enterprise
    • Encryption Type: AES
    • Leave all other settings as default. 
  9.  Click the Next button.Shows network name set to eduroam, security type wpa2-enterprise, encryption aes.
  10. A window should appear saying that you Successfully added eduroam. Click the Change Connection Settings option, and a new settings window should open. Option to "change connection settings" is highlighted.
  11. Click on the Security tab at the top, and verify that Security type is still WPA2-Enterprise, Encryption Type is still AES, and the Network Authentication Method is set to Microsoft: Protected EAP (PEAP).

  12. Click on the Settings button next to the drop-down menu.
  13. Un-check the box next to Validate Server Certificate"Validate server certificate" is highlighted and not checked.
  14. Make sure that the Secure Authentication Method is set to Secure Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2).
  15. Click the Configure button next to it. 
  16. Un-check the box next to Automatically use my Windows logon name and password. "Automatically use my Windows logon name" is not checked.
  17. Click OK two times to close the open settings windows. 
  18. Click the Advanced settings button. "Advanced settings" button is highlighted.
  19. Check the box next to Specify authentication modeOption to "specify authentication mode" is checked.
  20. Change the dropdown to User authentication and click Save credentials.
  21. A box should pop up asking for network authentication credentials. Network authentication login window.
  22. Enter you ONIDusername@oregonstate.edu in the top box, then your ONID password in the bottom box and click OK.
    • For unified employee accounts use ONIDusername@oregonstate.edu.
    • For employees who are not yet unified, use ONIDusername@onid.oregonstate.edu.
    • For the Username the "@onid.oregonstate.edu" or "@oregonstate.edu is required.
  23. Click OK three times to close the setup window.
  24. You should be looking at the Successfully added eduroam window again. 
  25. Click Close to close this window.
  26. Click on the wireless icon in the lower right-hand corner of your taskbar, select the eduroam network from the list, and click Connect.Available wireless networks with eduroam and "Connect" button highlighted.
  27. If it asks you to set a location for eduroam, choose Public Network. You should now be connected to the eduroam network!
