Issue/Question
- How do I add/change/remove Duo devices associated with my account?
Environment
- Oregon State
- Employee, Student or Associate
- ONID Account
- Duo user
Resolution
You may have multiple devices registered for your Duo two-step login, including smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and a security key. Over time, you may need to change your devices when:
- You change your smartphone's phone number
- You must replace your security key (lost, damaged)
- You would like to add or remove a tablet or smartwatch (note: some smartwatches can be treated as phones)
Before you begin:
- Try to make changes to your devices during open hours of the Service Desk: if something doesn't go as expected, the Service Desk can help you resolve problems quickly.
- It's best to add new devices before removing an existing device because you may need to complete a Duo authentication to add the new device. If you're changing your mobile phone number, keep your old phone active for Duo until you have the new phone/phone# working with Duo. Be sure to test the new device before removing the existing device.
Manage Your Duo Devices:
Add, remove or manage devices
- Go to duo.oregonstate.edu. Scroll down and click the button labeled "Manage your Duo devices."
- Select "I want to manage my mobile devices."
- Choose a Duo push or passcode to authenticate and continue.
- You will then see the screen below.
- From this screen, you can add or remove a device (phone, tablet, security key, etc). Step-by-step details for each action are given below.
- We recommend that you choose to have Duo automatically send a push to a mobile device as this further improves security for your Duo-protected account.
- This screen will also let you remove a security key.
- Please note: you will not be able to remove the last Duo device associated with your account. (i.e. at any given time, your account has to have at least 1 device registered to Duo)
Add a Mobile Device
- From the Device Management Screen (see image above), click the link for "Add another device."
- You should see the image below:
- Select the type of mobile device you want to add and click the green "Continue" button.
- Follow the on-screen directions to complete registration of the new device.
Add Security Key
- Select “Security Key (YubiKey, Feitan, etc.)” and then click “Continue”
- Read the directions on the next screen and click “Continue” again; a pop-up window will open after this
- When the “Insert and tap your Security Key to enroll...” window opens, tap the sensor on your Security Key
- If the window does not advance to the next window remove the Security Key and reconnect it to your computer and tap the sensor again
- Enter a PIN for your security key if prompted
- You may be prompted to touch the security key again
- On the “Allow this site to see your security key” window click “Allow”
- Once you have completed adding the security key, it will be listed in your Duo devices
Reactivate Duo Mobile on your mobile device
- From the Duo Device Management main menu (second image above), click the blue "Device Options" next to the device you need to reactivate.
- Click the blue "Reactivate Duo Mobile" button.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete reactivation.
Change the name Duo uses for your device
- Duo assigns a name to all your Duo devices. You may change this name to make it easier for you to remember.
- From the Duo Device Management main menu (second image above), click the blue "Device Options" next to the device you want to rename.
- Click the blue "Change Device Name" button.
- Enter a new name for the device and save.
Deactivate a Duo device
- When you deactivate a Duo device it can no longer be used for Duo authentication. You cannot deactivate your last Duo device.
- From the Duo Device Management main menu (second image above), click the blue "Device Options" next to the device you need to deactivate.
- Click the red trashcan icon.
- Confirm the choice to deactivate the device.
