Issue/Question
- How do I generate a temporary Duo access code?
Environment
- Oregon State University
- Employee, Student or Associate
- ONID Account
- Duo user
Resolution
If you have just one Duo device (e.g., phone or security key) there may be some situations where it's helpful or reassuring to have a temporary backup access code for Duo. A temporary access code will allow you to complete a Duo authentication even if your primary Duo device isn't available. Some situations might be:
- Your current Duo device is unreliable (e.g., failing battery).
- You're planning to replace your only Duo device, and need a way to activate your new device.
- You have important work to do outside of business hours.
You can generate a 24-hour Duo code in advance of these activities as a "backup" to your regular Duo device.
Please note:
- This code will be valid for unlimited uses for 24 hours
- The code must be generated in advance of the planned need -- a Duo authentication is needed to generate this code.
- We recommend having a second Duo device (security key or mobile device).
Generate a 24-hour Duo code
- Go to duo.oregonstate.edu. Scroll down and click the button labeled "Generate a temporary code."
- You will need to login and authenticate with Duo.
- You will see the following screen:
- Click the orange "Generate Temporary Duo Code" button.
- You will see a screen with your code and the expiration date/time.
