Explanation

In order to download, install and use the full Microsoft Office suite through Microsoft 365, you need to have the Microsoft 365 Apps license.

Resolution

Confirm Microsoft 365 Apps Eligibility

  1. First, make sure you are signed into Microsoft 365 correctly with your OSU username@oregonstate.edu account:
    1. In Word (for example), click on "Sign in" in the upper right

    2. Enter your username as username@oregonstate.edu and click Next
  2. Check your Microsoft 365 license:
    1. Visit https://portal.office.com/account/#installs
    2. If prompted, login as: username@oregonstate.edu
    3. If you see the message "You currently have not been assigned an office license that includes the Office desktop apps" this means that you are not eligible for Microsoft 365 Apps.

    4. If you see "Office" listed with an "Install Office" button, you are eligible for Microsoft 365 Apps.
  3. Review eligibility requirements:
    • Students: you must be registered for at least one course in the current term or a future term in order to install Office apps from Microsoft 365.
      • If you just registered for classes today, please wait until the following day to try installing Office apps.
      • If you are not registered for classes, you need to do so in order to be eligible to install Office apps.
    • Employees: you must have a currently active job at OSU in order to install Office apps from Microsoft 365.
      • If you are unsure whether you have an active job at OSU, please contact Human Resources to confirm.
    • Associates: associates are NOT eligible for the Microsoft 365 Apps license and cannot install Office apps from Office 365.
    • Alumni: alumni are NOT eligible for the Microsoft 365 Apps license and cannot install Office apps from Office 365.
    • Sponsored accounts: sponsored accounts are NOT eligible for the Microsoft 365 Apps license and cannot install Office apps from Office 365.

Requests for License Extension

In some cases we may be able to temporarily extend a Microsoft 365 Apps license. Common reasons for this include an employee whose job will start soon, or a student on temporary leave. Please contact the Service Desk to request a temporary extension; the Office 365 team will review each request on a case-by-case basis.
