Windows - Docusign XFA PDFs

Issue/Question

  • Docusign is rejecting my document.
  • I am getting the XFA error when I upload PDFs to Docusign.
  • How do I upload my PDF to Docusign?  I keep getting an error.

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Docusign
  • PDF
    • Dynamic XFA

Cause/Explanation

Docusign does not accept Dynamic XFA PDFs.  This file type is used to input electronic signatures and to allow areas to be filled out for the customer.

Resolution

Method 1

  1. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.
  2. Print the PDF as a Adobe PDF.
  3. Save the PDF to a convenient location when prompted.  This will 'flatten' the PDF and get rid of the Dynamic XFA portion of the PDF.
  4. If you do not need recipients of the PDF to type in the PDF's fields, you should be done.  If you need it so that recipients can type in the PDF fields, such as electronic signatures, keep following these steps to create a static XFA document, which Docusign accepts.
  5. Select the File option in the top left.
  6. Click the Create button in the dropdown menu.
  7. Click the Create Form button in the second dropdown menu.
  8. If your document automatically inserts itself here, go ahead and click on it.
  9. If your document did not automatically insert itself here, click Select a file.
  10. Browse to the location of the file you saved in Step 3, and open it.
  11. The PDF should automatically find and create fields in your document.  If there are fields that are missing, you will need to manually add those to the applicable sections.
  12. Save the file.

The file should now be compatible with Docusign and can now be submitted.
