Recording Solutions

Overview

You are encouraged to use any technology or software which you have access to and are familiar with in order to create your media content.

Zoom, Kaltura Webcam Recorder, and Kaltura Capture are university-supported tools that all students, faculty, and staff can access. You will need to upload your media to your personal My Media collection if you create your media content using a tool other than these three tools.

Issue/Question

  • How can I make a recording?
  • How can I record myself?

Environment

  • Oregon State
    • Windows
    • MacOS
    • iOS
    • iPadOS
    • Android
    • ChromeOS

Resolution

Oregon State University supports a number of different recording solutions for students, faculty, and staff. In addition to the software solutions listed below, professional production services are available.

Presentation Recordings

Presentations generally capture your screen, audio and, if desired, your webcam as well. Consider using Zoom to record a presentation by yourself or with a group.  Zoom cloud recordings are automatically uploaded to Kaltura once they have been processed by Zoom. Alternatively, Kaltura Capture can be downloaded and installed for presentation recordings.

Webcam Video or Audio Recordings

If your device has a built-in webcam and microphone, consider using the Kaltura Webcam Recorder. Turn off the camera in the Kaltura Webcam Recorder for an audio-only recording.

MacOS, Windows, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and Chromebook all have native webcam recording tools as well. Please consult the documentation for your device to learn how to record audio and video with your device.

Screen Recordings

Zoom can be used to record your screen only. Screen recording is also available natively on MacOS, Android, iOS, and iPadOS. If the instructions below do not match your device, please consult the documentation for your device. Kaltura Capture can also be used for screen recordings.

MacOS

  • Press Command + Shift + 5 to open the Screenshot Toolbar.
  • From the toolbar you can then select to record all of the screen, or only a portion of the screen.
  • Click the Record button on the toolbar to begin recording.
  • A circle with a square will appear in your MacOS menu bar while you record. Press this icon to stop your recording or Command + Control + Esc.
  • After you have stopped your recording, a file will appear on your desktop of the recording you have made.

iOS/iPadOS

  • Go to Settings > Control Center, then tap the + button next to Screen Recording.
  • Open Control Center, tap the Record button, then wait for the three-second countdown.
  • To stop recording, open Control Center, tap Record button or the red status bar at the top of the screen, then tap Stop.
  • After you have stopped your recording, a file will appear in your Photos app.

Android

  • Swipe down twice from the top of your screen.
  • Tap Screen record button.
    • You might need to swipe right to find it.
    • If it's not there, tap Edit pencil icon and drag the Screen Record button to your Quick Settings.
  • Choose what you want to record and tap Start. The recording begins after the countdown.
  • To stop recording, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Screen Recorder notification.
  • After you have stopped your recording, a file will appear in the Library > Movies folder of your Photos app.

Upload your Media Content to Kaltura

If you create your media content using a tool other than Zoom, Kaltura Webcam Recorder, or Kaltura Capture, be sure to upload your media to your personal My Media collection.

Note: If you use Zoom to record your media content, it may take some time depending on the length of the record for the Zoom recording to transfer to Kaltura and your personal My Media collection. You should receive an email from OSU Kaltura Support <customer_service@kaltura.com> when your media has been transferred and is ready for you to use.
