MS Teams and Exchange Online - Student Login Issues

Issue/Question

  • How do I start a TeamDynamix article?
  • How do I word this in a first person point of view?
  • How is the customer going to ask this question?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Student Employee
  • Microsoft Teams, Exchange Online

Cause/Explanation

Students login to Microsoft Teams with their username@oregonstate.edu (ONID) account.

Student employees will login to Exchange Online as se-username@oregonstate.edu. (The "SE" stands for "student employee").

When logging in to Teams first and then trying to access Outlook Web App, student employees will see an error saying "mailbox could not be found" because the ONID account is not licensed for Exchange.

Conversely, student employees signing in to Outlook Web App first will get an error when trying to access Teams because the Exchange account is not licensed for Teams.

Resolution

To open both Teams and Outlook Web App in a web browser:

  1. Login to Teams at teams.oregonstate.edu as username@oregonstate.edu
  2. Open an incognito or private browsing window and go to https://outlook.office365.com/; login as se-username@oregonstate.edu

Alternatively, you can install the Teams app and login there, then login to Outlook Web App via a web browser.
