Mailman - Change List Member Settings or access a List Archive

Issue/Question

  • How do I change my list member settings?
  • How do I set my Mailman list subscription to "nomail" or "digest" mode?
  • How do I access my Mailman list archives?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Mailing Lists
  • Mailman

Explanation

Mailman sets a unique password per list subscriber per list. By default, these passwords can be sent via email and allow list members to sign in to the web interface and set subscriber settings like "nomail" and "digest" mode.  This password could also be used to access the list archives if enabled.

However, as of May 11, 2021, all of the Mailman features that send a list password via email have been disabled for security reasons.

Due to this change private archives for lists are no longer supported on the list servers.  If archives are enabled the list owner still has access to them via the list management interface.

Resolution

Contact the List Owner

To change your subscriber settings on a Mailman list, contact the list owner.

If you do not know who the list owner is, you can find the owner(s) by following these steps:

  1. Visit http://lists.oregonstate.edu
  2. Enter the name of the list and select "Go to list"
  3. At the bottom of the page, you will see "<Listname> list run by <owner address>"

Alternatively, you can send to the following address, replacing <listname> with the name of the list: <listname>-owner@lists.oregonstate.edu

Assistance

If the list owner would like a copy of the archives for reference, they should submit a ticket that should be escalated to Infrastructure.

For assistance, contact the Service Desk.
