Mailman - Uncaught Bounce Notification

Issue/Question

  • When I tried to send a message to a list, the list owner received an "uncaught bounce notification" message from Mailman.

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Mailman

Explanation

When Mailman sends out messages to list subscribers, it uses a hidden reply-to address of listname-bounces@lists.oregonstate.edu. If any of the list members bounce back as undeliverable, the bounces go to the special -bounces address, where Mailman processes them. Depending on the list settings, it may notify the list owner.

Sometimes people send to the listname-bounces@lists.oregonstate.edu address by mistake. The -bounces address may be stored in a contact or the Outlook nickname cache.

Resolution

Make sure to send to listname@lists.oregonstate.edu and not to listname-bounces@lists.oregonstate.edu.
