MacOS - How to update to macOS Ventura

Issue/Question

Environment

• Oregon State University
• University Owned Apple computers
• macOS

Explanation

Upgrading your macOS version ensures your machine gets the latest security updates and maintains compatibility with many applications used as part of University business. We are recommending you perform this update as part of our effort to improve security and support future integration with Jamf and Microsoft Intune, which will further improve University endpoint management to maintain a secure and stable environment for our users.

Resolution

Before you get started

• The entire update process can take up to 90 minutes. Ensure you have enough time to let the update complete without needing to turn off or use the machine
• If you have a Time Machine backup, it would be recommended to run a backup before completing the OS Upgrade process
• If you do not have a Time Machine backup and have any particularly important documents, it is recommended you back them up to a cloud service such as Onedrive or Box

Method 1

1. Click on the Apple in upper left corner of the screen and select “System Preferences”.

2. Click on the “Software Update” button.

3. You should see an option that says “macOS Ventura 13.0”.
4. Click the button named “Update Now”, “Upgrade Now”, “Install Now”, or “Restart Now”. You might then be asked to enter your administrator password.

5. After some time, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Click the “Restart Now” option to begin the installation.
6. Your computer will sit at a black screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar during the update. Do not turn off, restart, or unplug your Mac during this process.
   • The upgrade process may take 30 minutes to an hour to complete,
7. When the update is complete, you will be prompted to log into your computer normally.

Congratulations! You are now on the latest macOS version.
