VPN - Setup for Android and Chromebook

Question

  • How do I set up an Oregon State VPN on an Android or Chromebook device?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Employee, Student
  • Android
  • Chromebook
  • VPN

Resolution

Personal Device

  1. Download the Cisco AnyConnect app from the Google Play Store
  2. Open the app and click "OK" on the End User License Agreement
  3. The software will ask you to allow it to make and manage phone calls; select "Allow" (but AnyConnect will not actually make calls)
  4. Select "Connections"
  5. Select "Add New VPN Connection"
    • Select "Description" and enter: OSU
    • Select "Server address" and enter: vpn.oregonstate.edu
    • Click "Done"
  6. On the main screen next to "AnyConnect VPN", there will be a slider set to "Off"; select the slider to connect
  7. You will see an OSU login window
    1. If you need to switch to split tunnel, click on the back arrow at the top-left of the login screen; otherwise, continue to step 8 below.
    2. Select "OSU Community (split tunnel)" from the drop-down menu
    3. Select "Open Browser"
  8. Enter your OSU username and password
    • You will need to do Duo two-step login
  9. Click "Accept" on the banner page.
  10. If you see a message that says "AnyConnect wants to set up a VPN connection that allows it to monitor network traffic. Only accept if you trust the source," select "OK."
  11. You are now connected to the OSU VPN. A key icon will appear at the top of the screen and the slider in the AnyConnect app will show "On."
  12. To disconnect, open the AnyConnect app and click on the slider again. It will show "Off" when you are disconnected.

OSU-managed Device

Older Chromebooks

Check your Chromebook model and version at https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en - if the Auto Update Expiration date has passed for your device, you will not be able to install the latest Cisco AnyConnect client needed to connect to the OSU VPN.

VPN Alternatives

See VPN - Troubleshooting and Alternatives for alternatives to the VPN service. Note that most OSU services do not require VPN to access remotely.
