Top Hat: How do I create an account in Top Hat?

Create a Student Account in Top Hat

It is very important that students register their Top Hat account using their OSU ONID email address. Creating a Top Hat account using a non-ONID email will prevent student scores from Top Hat to synchronize with their grades in Canvas. Creating an account through the Top Hat course menu item in Canvas is the preferred method for students to create and access their Top Hat account. If your instructor is using Top Hat and does not have a Top Hat menu item in their Canvas course, let us know at and we can reach out to the faculty member.

Create Top Hat Account through Canvas

  1. Go to your Canvas course, click on Top Hat in the course menu on the left
  2. Click on Sign up to Create account
  3. Check I agree with the Terms and Conditions and click Next to proceed
  4. Enter your 9-digit Student ID, or skip this step
  5. Enter your mobile phone number, or skip this step
  6. Click Continue to purchase a Top Hat subscription
  7. Choose a 1 Year or Lifetime (5 Year) subscription, or enter a Top Hat access code
    • Currently, a Lifetime (5 Year) subscription provides the best cost-savings for students who will need to use Top Hat for more than a year, e.g. first- and second-year students.
    • Top Hat subscription codes are also available through the OSU Beaver Store and include Lifetime (5 Year), 1 Year, and 1 Term (4 Month) subscription codes
  8. Complete the purchase and click on Go to my Lobby to see any Top Hat course(s) in which you are a student.

Top Hat Classroom vs. Top Hat Test Subscriptions

Most students will only need a Top Hat Classroom subscription (see above). However, some faculty have opted to also use the Top Hat Test feature in their course as well. The Top Hat Test subscription is a separate and additional $8.50 per term for courses using Top Hat Test.
