VPN - Access for External Users

Issue/Question

  • I have been granted an exception to use the OSU VPN; how do I connect?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • External user
  • VPN

Explanation

External users require an exception to use VPN. The request must be made by an IT pro and sponsored by an OSU department. For more information, see: VPN - Exception Process for External Users

This article describes how external users connect to the OSU VPN once they have been granted an exception.

Resolution

Install the Cisco AnyConnect Client

The IT pro you worked with during the exception process should be able to provide you with the Cisco AnyConnect installer. Cisco has installers for: Windows, Windows ARM64, macOS, and Linux. Apps for Android and iOS are available in the Google Play Store and Apple app store.

Connect to OSU VPN

  1. Open Cisco AnyConnect VPN software.
  2. Enter vpn.oregonstate.edu in the blank white-space and click Connect.
  3. A Cisco AnyConnect Login screen will appear with a connection type window behind it.
    • Hidden behind the login screen will be another window labeled "Cisco AnyConnect | vpn.oregonstate.edu" where you can select your connection type.
    • Select either "Others (Full Tunnel)" or "Others (Split Tunnel)"; Note that most external users will be granted full tunnel access only
    • If you can't see the connection type window, click and drag the login window out of the way
  4. Enter your username and password and click OK
  5. Click Accept when prompted
  6. You are now connected to the VPN. An icon in the system tray with a closed padlock shows that you are connected. You can right-click this icon and choose to disconnect or quit the VPN connection.
