MS Teams - Change or Add a Team Owner

Issue/Question

  • How do I change the owner of a team?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Microsoft Teams

Explanation

Note: it is recommended that all Teams and private channels have at least two owners.

Resolution

Method 1 - A Current Owner is Available to Make Changes

The current (previous) team owner should follow these steps:

  1. Login to Teams
  2. Select the ellipsis next to the team name and select "Manage Team"
  3. If the new owner is not yet a member of the team, select "Add member" to add them
  4. Find the new owner in the member list (the search box at the top can be used if the list is long)
  5. Select the drop-down next to the member's name and change from "Member" to "Owner"
  6. The current (previous) owner can set themselves to "Member", or another owner can make that change.

Method 2 - All Owners are Gone
