Cosine Printing - "A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue."

Issue/Question

  • When attempting to add a printer using the Cosine print server (\\cos-print), you receive the following error: "A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue."

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Windows computers in non-Science domains
  • Cosine Printing

Explanation

Due to Microsoft security changes in Summer 2021, we have implemented a policy to allow printing from OSU computers to printers on the Cosine print server. The policy requires that the print server name be entered as "cos-print.science.oregonstate.edu" and not as "cos-print."

This issue affects computers in Active Directory domains outside of Science, e.g. CN, ONID, etc. Computers joined to the Science domain in Active Directory will not have this issue.

Resolution

Instead of typing "\\cos-print" from Start > Run to add Cosine printers, use the fully qualified domain name: \\cos-print.science.oregonstate.edu
