Background
When you use a version of Tableau that is more advanced that the version running on the server there is a risk that certain features in your dashboard will not be supported on the server. If a new release contained a visualization feature that was not previously available this would not be supported on the server since the server is usually running on an older version of Tableau. This does not happen often though as most versions released by Tableau contain bug fixes and do not provide new visualization functionality.
Resolution
Checking the Tableau Server Version
- When logged into the Tableau Server, click on the information icon (?) in the upper right hand corner of the server window
- In the drop down menu select "About Tableau Server"
- The version of Tableau Server is listed in the About Tableau Server dialog box:

Checking Your Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep Version
Note: These steps are the same for Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep.

- Open Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep
- In the top menu bar, select "Help"
- In the drop down menu, select "About Tableau"
- The version of Tableau Desktop or Tableau Prep you are running is in the pop up window that appears
