Issue/Question

  • Is macOS Ventura recommended for UIT-supported computers?
  • Should I upgrade to Ventura?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Employee or Student Employee
  • UIT-supported computer

Explanation

Ventura was released by Apple on October 24, 2022.

Starting January 17, 2023, OSU-managed Macs can be upgraded to Ventura.

UIT will support new computers that ship with Ventura already installed.

For a list of Mac models that support Ventura, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_Ventura#Supported_hardware

Caution: Before upgrading any macOS, make sure you backup your files.

Known Issues with macOS Ventura:

  • On the first login after an upgrade to Ventura, the login screen shows "Enter Password or Touch ID" but Touch ID is not valid until after the first login following a reboot.
  • Software that has been manually granted the 'Full Disk Access' permission may need to be re-granted the permission (remove the permission and add it back). Permissions granted via an MDM Profile do not need to be adjusted (e.g. Jamf granting Full Disk Access to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint)
  • External devices (docking stations, USB hubs, etc) may need to be granted access to connect to the machine again (Click 'Allow' on the "Allow [Device] to Connect?" prompt)

Tested Software That Does Work with Ventura:

  • Cisco AnyConnect Client (VPN)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote)
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop
  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Zoom
  • VLC
  • Visual Studio Code
  • OBS
  • Box Drive
  • iTerm 2
  • Krita
  • Sublime Text
  • DisplayLink Manager
  • Citrix Workspace
  • VMWare Horizon Client
