Google Drive - "Storage Low" or "Storage is Full"

Issue/Question

  • Is there a storage cap on OSU Google Drive?
  • What is the storage limite on OSU Google Drive?
  • In Google, I received a "storage low" message.
  • In Google, I received the message "your storage is full."

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • G Suite
  • Google Drive

Explanation

Google Drive and the rest of the Google Workspace platform (previously "G Suite") have been in use at OSU for many years. Historically, Google has offered educational organizations unlimited storage at no cost, however, they have changed their model and will begin charging us for data overages. For more information, please see: Google Drive Migration

As of October 2023, the default Google storage quota for OSU is 10 GB per person. Users who already had more data were set with a higher quota but do still have a quota.

When a Google storage quota is met, access becomes read-only.

Resolution

Each OSU user has access to up to 5 TB of storage space in Microsoft 365 via the OneDrive app. OneDrive offers many similar features to Google Drive, and is a more secure platform for OSU data.

For information about OneDrive, see: Microsoft 365 for Oregon State

We also have access to storage and collaboration functionality in Box. For more information, see box.oregonstate.edu.

For information about migrating data from Google Drive to OneDrive, see: Google Drive Migration
