University Operational Data Systems - Which data products (CORE, Tableau, etc.) require VPN to access?

Issue/Question

  • Which IAR tools require VPN?
  • Which DIA data products require VPN?
  • When should I use the OSU VPN?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • CORE
  • Tableau
  • GRS
  • OSUF
  • Jaspersoft
  • Employees, Students and Associates

Explanation

If you are handling sensitive or confidential data, usage of the OSU VPN from off-campus is required to secure your connection and protect the data you access. If the user is not using the OSU Secure wifi network to access the tools, then the OSU VPN is required for the list of tools in the resolution section. When people try to access these tools without the OSU VPN from a non-OSU Secure network, the user will receive an error message or a never ending loading screen.

Instructions on setting up and using the OSU VPN can be found at: https://oregonstate.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/1935/Portal/KB/?CategoryID=6889.

Resolution

The following DIA data products require the OSU VPN when you are accessing them from off campus.
  • CORE Dashboards (SRSS or Tableau)
    • CORE reports do not require the OSU VPN to run
  • Grant Report System (GRS or GRRS)
  • Oregon State University Foundation (OSUF) Systems
    • FS Index Reimbursement System
    • Scholarship System
    • Direct Payment System
  • Jaspersoft
    • Jaspersoft is accessed using the Data Analytics tab in the CORE menu. If someone does not have this tab then they do not have access to Jaspersoft.
  • Tableau Server
    • Tableau dashboards in CORE
