Duo - Adding Touch ID as Duo Device

Issue/Question

  • What is Touch ID?
  • How do I add my Mac Touch ID as an authentication device for my account?

 

Important Note: Touch ID can be used only for web-based login.  It will not work for interactive logins, such as SSH sessions.

Environment

  • Oregonstate
  • Employee, Student or associate
  • ONID account
  • Duo user

Requirements

You must have the following:

  • A Mac computer with Touch ID
  • Chrome Internet Browser

Resolution

You may have your Mac Computer Touch ID be registered as a device for your Duo two-step login.

 

Before you begin:

  • Try to make changes to your devices during open hours of the IS Service Desk: if something doesn't go as expected, the Service Desk can help you resolve problems quickly.
  • It's best to add new devices before removing an existing device because you may need to complete a Duo authentication to add the new device. If you're changing your mobile phone number, keep your old phone active for Duo until you have the new phone/phone# working with Duo. Be sure to test the new device before removing the existing device.

Add Touch ID

  1. Set up Touch ID on your Mac computer.
  2. Go to duo.oregonstate.edu. Scroll down and click the button labeled "Manage your Duo devices."

  3. Select "I want to manage my mobile devices."

  4. You will need to log into Duo again to proceed.

  5. Click “Add a new device” under the OSU logo.

  6. Select either “Send Me a Push” or “Enter a Passcode” to verify your account.

  7. Select “Touch ID” and then click “Continue”.

  8. Read the directions on the next screen and click “Continue”.

  9. When the “Waiting for Touch ID to verify you...” window opens, press your finger on the Touch ID sensor.

  10. On the “Allow this site to see your security key” window click “Allow”.
