Kaltura: Create or edit an interactive video quiz

This article describes how to use the Kaltura Video Editing Tools Quiz Tab in MediaSpace or Canvas to create an Interactive Video Quiz (IVQ).

Environment

  • Oregon State
    • MediaSpace
    • Canvas

Resolution

Note: You may create or modify a quiz from Video, Audio and YouTube entries. You may not create quizzes from Live and Image entries. When creating a quiz, a copy of the media is created, and the original media is retained.

Access the Editor

  1. Visit My Media in either Canvas or MediaSpace
  2. Click the pencil icon that corresponds to your video in order to edit that video's information
  3. Click the Launch Editor button

  4. Click the Quiz icon in the side toolbar

Creating a Quiz

  1. Click Start to begin creating your Quiz
  2. Set your quiz parameters
    • The Details tab contains the following parameters:

      Quiz Name

      Title of your quiz

      Show Welcome Message

      The message that is displayed on the first screen of the quiz. If you disable the Welcome message display, viewers will not be able to see the Pre-test question list.

      Allow Download to Question List

      Your viewers will be able to download the quiz question list and possible answers before they start playing the media.

      Instructions

      Includes basic instructions on how to complete the quiz.

    • The Scores tab contains the following parameters:

      Allow Multiple Attempts

      Permit your viewers to take the quiz more than once.

      Do Not Show Scores

      A 'Thank You' message will display after submitting the quiz. No scores will be presented to the quiz-taker.

      Show Scores

      Your viewers will see the quiz score page after the quiz is submitted.

      Include Answers

      Your viewers will be able to see correct/incorrect answers, as well as the correct answer’s rationale if you chose to add it during the quiz creation (add link to where we talk about the “Why” button)

    • The Experience tab contains the following parameters:

      Allow Answers Change

      Your viewers will be able to change an answer before submitting the entire quiz, during review mode.

      Allow Skip

      Users will be presented with the "Skip for Now" button.

      Do not Allow Skip

      Users must submit an answer before proceeding forward.

      No seeking forward

      Users will not be able to use the seek bar to navigate the video past the point they viewed.

  3. Add a question to your quiz
    • Tip: To preview your quiz, click on the Preview button above the video.
  4. Click Done when you've completed creating your quiz and a new entry will be added to your My Media collection with the quiz applied.

Adding Questions to Your Quiz

  1. In the timeline underneath your video, drag the handlebar to the point where you want to insert a question
    • Alternate methods:
      • Play the video until you arrive at the point where you want to insert a question
      • Enter the specific time where you want to insert a question in the time code box underneath your video
  2. Click the Add a Question button

  3. Select your desired question type from the following options
    • Multiple Choice: Question with only one correct answer
    • True/False: A question with only 2 options - True or False
    • Reflection Point: A video pause combined with text
    • Open-Ended Question: Answer the question with your own words
  4. Select your desired question type
  5. Enter your question and - in the case of Multiple Choice and True/False - your optional answers
    • Tip: You can enter a URL in your question by pressing the shortcut CTRL-K (in Windows) or COMMAND-K (in MacOS) on your keyboard.
    • For Multiple Choice and True/False questions, the correct answer will be indicated to you with the checked green box.
    • For Multiple Choice questions, click the + button to add another option. Multiple Choice questions can have up to 4 options.
    • Tip: In the case of Multiple Choice questions, the first entry will initially be the correct answer. Click the shuffle icon to randomly shuffle the options.
  6. Add a hint for Multiple Choice, True/False, and Open-Ended Question types by clicking on the light bulb icon and choosing "Hint"
  7. Add a rationale for Multiple Choice, True/False, and Open-Ended Question types by clicking on the light bulb icon and choosing "Why"

Editing/Deleting Questions in Your Quiz

  1. In the timeline underneath your video, click on the marker for the question you wish to delete or edit
  2. In the question's parameters page, modify the question or click Delete to delete it entirely
