Issue/Question

  • Who is eligible for VPN access?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Employee, Student, Associate
  • VPN

Resolution

Current ONID Users

The OSU VPN server is available to the following groups:

  • Students who are enrolled in a course in the current term or future term
  • Students who are eligible to register for a course
  • Non-terminated employees
  • Current associates
  • Current sponsored account holders

Duo two-step login is required to access the VPN for all ONID account users.

If an ONID user is not in one of the groups listed above, they will not be automatically eligible to use the VPN. However, they may request an extension to VPN access. To do so, a current OSU employee must sponsor their request.

Note: Delays in entering a new job in Banner can sometimes cause issues with employee VPN access. Please contact Human Resources in that case.

External Non-ONID Users

If a user does not have an ONID account, a VPN exception will be needed. Example use cases inlcude vendors, contractors, interns and volunteers who need remote access to OSU systems.

VPN exceptions must be requested by a department IT Pro, sponsored by a current OSU employee, and reviewed by the Office of Information Security. For more information about the VPN exception process, see: VPN - Exception Process

DINO accounts can no longer be used to connect to the new VPN server (vpn.oregonstate.edu). Users must have either a regular ONID account, a sponsored ONID account, or a delegated account in ONID Active Directory.
