Tableau Troubleshooting

Issue/Question

  • I am getting an error message when trying to login to Tableau.
  • Why can I not connect to a data source on the Tableau server?

Environment

  • Oregon State University
  • Tableau

Explanation

This article documents the resolutions to common errors that people encounter when using Tableau Desktop, Server and Prep. Before trying these steps it is suggested that you try the general data tool troubleshooting tips in https://oregonstate.teamdynamix.com/TDClient/1935/Portal/KB/ArticleDet?ID=134373. Use this page if the general data tool troubleshooting tips do not resolve the issue.

Resolution

Receiving an error message saying login credentials are not valid when logging in to the Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop

  1. Close all instances of Tableau Desktop and Tableau Prep

  2. Open Tableau Desktop, navigate to "Help" > "Settings and Performance" > "Clear Saved Server Sign-Ins"

  3. Log into Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop

If this does not resolve the issue then:

  1. Make sure that Tableau Desktop is not running. Close all the open Tableau Desktop windows if there is any.

  2. Navigate to C:\Users\<User Name>\Documents\My Tableau Repository

  3. Delete 'Logs' folder. The new "Logs" folder will be created in the My Tableau Repository folder upon starting the Tableau Desktop.
