Exchange Email - Can't Set Automatic Forward

Explanation

Auto-forwarding from OSU Exchange email to external addresses has been disallowed by policy since July 1, 2021. For details, see: Auto-Forwarding from Exchange Disabled July 1, 2021

However, it was still possible for users to set an automatic forward that did not function. As of 6/20/2023, this is no longer possible in Outlook on the Web. 

The change on 6/20/2023 did not effect any existing forwards. Email administrators still have the ability to set a mailbox forward. Exceptions for mailbox forwards to external addresses should still be reviewed by the Office of Information Security.

Users can still set a forward using mailbox rules. Note that auto-forwards to external addresses that are not on the approved list will still fail, even if they are set with a mailbox rule.

Resolution

If you need to set a mailbox forward to an OSU address, please contact your IT team.

If you need to set a mailbox forward to an external address, you will need to work with your IT team and request approval for an exception from the Office of Information Security.
