Canvas: Hide or Post Grades in the Canvas Gradebook

How can I control whether grades are hidden or posted for students on an assignment in Canvas?

Resolution

To utilize the full functionality of the Post Policies and Post/Hide Grades features in Canvas, please review the Canvas Guide: How do I use posting policies in a course?

Hide grades preemptively on an assignment

To hide grades from students, prior to grading the assignment, an instructor should change the Post Policy applied to the assignment to Manual Posting.

1. Click Grades
2. Hover mouse cursor over the assignment column header
3. Click three vertical dots that appear on the column header
4. Select Grade Posting Policy at bottom of the drop-down list
5. Select Manually from the fly-out menu on the right of the screen
6. Click Save at the bottom of the fly-out menu

If you had already started entering grades before setting the Manual Post policy, you will also need to click Hide Grades to hide the currently entered scores.

Hide grades that were previously entered

1. Click Grades
2. Hover mouse cursor over the assignment column header
3. Click three vertical dots that appear on the column header
4. Click Hide grades near the middle of the drop-down list
5. Click Hide near the bottom of the fly-out menu on the right side of the screen

Post grades on an assignment

1. Click Grades
2. Hover mouse cursor over the assignment column header
3. Click three vertical dots that appear on the column header
4. Click Post grades near the middle of the drop-down list
5. Click Post near the bottom of the fly-out menu on the right side of the screen
