Canvas: Adjust the due dates on a Canvas assignment for a subset of students_migrating

Overview

Canvas is Oregon State University's Learning Management System. Differentiated assignments in Canvas allow an instructor to provide an alternative due date for one or more student or assign a graded activity in Canvas to a subset of students, e.g. a graduate student-only assignment.

Adjust Due Date for an Individual or Group of Students

  1. Navigate to the assignment in your Canvas course
  2. Click Edit on the assignment details page
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the assignment settings page
  4. Click +Add immediately below the default "Assign To" box
  5. In the new "Assign To" box that appears, start typing the name of the student(s) who should have the alternative due date
  6. Select the name of the student(s) from the list of students that appears as you type
  7. Enter the alternative due date in the new "Assign To" box
  8. Verify that the default "Assign To" box displays "Everyone Else" and the new "Assign To" box displays the name of any student who should have the alternative due date
  9. Click Save

Assign Graded Activity to a Subset of Students

  1. Navigate to the assignment in your Canvas
  2. course
  3. Click Edit on the assignment details page
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the assignment settings page
  5. Remove "Everyone" from the default "Assign To" box
  6. Start typing the name of the student(s) who should complete the assignment
  7. Select the name of the student(s) from the list of students that appears as you type
  8. Provide dates as needed
  9. Click Save
  10. A Warning box will appear informing you that not all students will be assigned. Click Continue to save the settings

The assignment will not be visible to unassigned students, and the corresponding fields in the instructor's gradebook will be unavailable for grade entry.
